For an immersive experience, consider staying at one of the campsites, including paddle-in sites that offer a front-row seat to the cool fall evenings and starry skies.

Adventure Tip: Enhance your visit to Lake James by stopping at Fonta Flora Whippoorwill Farm. This historic dairy farm has been converted into a brewery featuring award-winning beverages and a local food truck. With its whimsical old buildings and peaceful garden, it is an ideal spot to relax after a morning on the trails.

Alternatively, head to South Mountains State Park, where the landscape rises into rugged backcountry. Here, trails follow mountain streams and climb through hardwood forests toward rewarding overlooks. For a gentler journey, try the Hidden Cove Trail through the peaceful woodland. If you are seeking more of a challenge, the Chestnut Knob Trail offers a hearty climb with sweeping views across the surrounding peaks.

Visitors should be aware that the High Shoals Falls Trail, including the waterfall viewing areas, remains closed due to damage from Hurricane Helene. However, South Mountains State Park features nearly 50 miles of trails, and many paths accessible from the Jacob Fork area remain open. These routes offer a quieter, more reflective side of the park. Be sure to check current conditions and respect all posted closures before you set out.

No autumn trip is complete without a taste of the season. Near the South Mountains, you will find Apple Hill Orchard & Cider Mill. You can stroll through rows of trees and pick your own apples or visit the farm market for fresh cider and baked goods. Please note that Picking Passes are required for those who wish to pick their own fruit and need to be purchased in advance on their website. Didn’t plan ahead? The farm store is open to the public every day.
